Forgotten Tour #151: Westchester Square, The Bronx

Visit the heart of what used to be the county seat of Westchester County before it became the Bronx, and see ancient cemeteries, libraries and a churchyard featuring remains of colonial settlers. Then we’ll walk through Unionport to see some historic structures — some of which have hidden secrets of the area’s past hidden in plain sight — and finish with a look at Parkchester and its unique terra cotta work.
WHEN: Sunday, September 8, 12 NOON; tour begins shortly after
WHERE: Meet at the Chair monument in Westchester Square, shown above. Take the #6 train to the Westchester Square stop. Note: train schedules may change on weekends.
HOW MUCH: $20; $15 for Greater Astoria Historical Society members
HOW LONG: approximately 2.5 hours
TERRAIN: Mostly flat, uneven in cemetery. Rain or shine, within reason. Steady heavy rain or storms will postpone. We walk in light rain or showers.
