On June 15, 1904, a jolly church picnic aboard the paddle wheel boat General Slocum
became New York City's worst maritime disaster, as the boat caught fire.
Until 9/11/2001, the General Slocum fire was the most tragic event in New York's history. Over 1,000 people
, mostly women and children, perished in the disaster.
Most of the following images are from a book, "New York's Awful Steamboat Horror" published within months of the event.
