Peter Vallone Sr. is the featured speaker for Monday, June 5 program in the Greater Astoria Historical Society’s acclaimed lecture series.
The Vallone family needs no introduction to the Astoria/Long Island City community, nor to the New York City political scene.
Peter’s father, the late Judge Charles Vallone, was a Civil Court Judge and Civil Rights Advocate who founded both the Variety Boys and Girls Club and the Astoria Civic Association. Peter Sr, who was elected in 1974 to represent the 22nd Councilmanic District in Astoria, served as Speaker and Majority Leader of the New York City Council from 1986 through 2001.
Known as a reformer in city government, Peter left an imprint on many pieces of legislation from reform of the city charter to his "Safe Streets/Safe City" legislation. He passed eleven consecutive balance budgets on time while accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of increased funding for parks, libraries, cultural institutions, health care and youth programs - while finding over $260 million in tax cuts.
Hailed as the ‘First Family of Astoria" by the Greater Astoria Historical Society, the evening will feature a brief slide lecture on the Vallone family followed by a brief discussion by Peter Vallone Sr. on his recent book, "Learning to Govern: My Life in New York Politics from Hell Gate to City Hall."
According to society president Bob Singleton, "this book is a unique glimpse into our community and the life of its ‘favorite son.’ It’s a must buy for anyone who loves Astoria and wants to understand our wonderful neighborhood."
Peter will sign copies of his book, which will be available at their cover price of $20.
