Sunnyside Gardens at 90 – Lecture and Exhibit.
On Thursday, October 9 at 7 PM historian and preservationist Jeffrey A. Kroessler and architect Laura Heim, past president of the AIA Queens Chapter, will present “Sunnyside Gardens at 90.”
Their illustrated lecture will discuss the origins and significance of this garden suburb, including its importance in urban planning, design, and history, and the at times contentious campaign to gain designation as a historic district.
They will also show how homeowners have restored and upgraded their properties under the regulation of the Landmarks Preservation Commission and at the same time provide for contemporary living.
The evening‘s moderator, Prof. Deborah Van Cura of LaGaurdia Community College, starts things off with a discussion the role that Jacob Reis in exposing the plight of urban housing, and the possible solution in Ebenezer Howard in the ‘Garden City’ Movement.
