Chapter 6 We The People, Page 103
This is the 1940 Columbus Day observance held in Columbus Square and Astoria Park. A year later,
in October 1941, Alexander Del Giorno, of the All-American Monument Committee, announced the
unveling of a statue of Christopher Columbus at Columbus Square, at Hoyt Avenue and Astoria Boulevard
at 31st Street. Every Columbus Day, Italian-Americans, joined by other community groups, have held
a parade celebrating Columbus. (Courtesy Bob Ulino.)
The Athens 2004 Olympic torch relay in New York City started in Athens Square, the center of the
Greek-Americcan community outside of Greece. Denis Syntilas proudly accepts the torch before it starts
its journey through the streets of New York City and eventually on to the summer Olympic games
of 2004 in Athens, Greece. (Courtesy GAHS.)
