Chapter 4 Industry and Commerce, Page 66
Built after 1870, the Steinway piano factory is still a cornerstone of the American entertainment
industry. For 150 years, and with over 100 patents, a happy marriage of skilled labor and cutting-edge
technology has given birth to over half a million pianos. Today, the Steinway piano remains the envy of the
industry. There is a Steinway instrument on the stage at Carnegie Hall and in the White House.

In the 19th century, it was not uncommon to hire children and teenagers to perform unskilled, often menial tasks.
Regulations existing for education and employment were often ignored. These boys worked at the
Steinway piano factory for wages that were probably meager and under conditions difficult by today's
standards. However, the boys' work was a welcome source of additional family income. (Courtesy Henry Steinway.)
