Chapter 2 Architecture and Housing, Page 38
Representing a pleasing sweep of domestic Victorian architecture of its day, this block of stately homes on 12th
Street in old Astoria village existed up to about 20 years ago. Only the structure on the left remains.

Located at 21st Street, Astoria Boulevard, and Newtown Avenue, the Astoria "Flatiron" building
still commands this intersection. Newtown Avenue, on the left, was the mid-17th-century road
to the Hallett settlement. This was the commercial center of old Astoria village, housing a series
of furniture stores from Gally's (c. 1910) to Ethan Allen (the 1980s). (Courtesy Bob Stonehill.)
