Chapter 1 The Birth of Long Island City, Page 15
Owned by Issac B. Strang, a box manufacturer during the Civil War
, this humble home stood near Vernon Boulevard and Broadway and was a typical vernacular house. A pane of
glass in one of its windows had the description "Libby Field, Jan. 1, 1806" scratched on its surface.
The Fields, originally from Flushing, built this long-gone dwelling. (Courtesy GAHS.)
The Robert Tisdale house was a grand residence built during the 1820s in the style
of a Southern planater's mansion. With a commanding view of the East River from Halletts Cove to
Pot Cove, it stood at the summit of "the Hill" in old Astoria village. The community had wealth, taste, and
refinement. (Courtesy Bob Stonehill.)
